At home in Salzburg and around the world for over 70 years: Camerata has shaped the city of music with its own concert series and as a regular ensemble at the Salzburg Festival and Mozart Week. Musicians from more than 20 nations form the orchestra’s sound that is particularly representative of Viennese classical music, in particular the music of its hometown’s famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The orchestra also discovers the works of the Romantic period in the form of new chamber orchestral transparency and spans the repertoire from the Baroque to the modern era. Under the artistic direction of the “primi inter pares”, Camerata has since 2016 performed under its own leadership and with a democratic self-image with its concertmasters Gregory Ahss and Giovanni Guzzo and, depending on the repertoire, in collaboration with guest conductors.
A versatile and passionate musician, Baptiste Lopez is Konzertmeister of the Kammerorchester Basel and a sought-after chamber musician and soloist. Trained in Paris under Jean-Jacques Kantorow, he quickly established himself as concertmaster with leading ensembles such as the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, Collegium Vocale Gent, and La Chambre Philharmonique. Deeply influenced by his early collaborations with Philippe Herreweghe and the Saintes Academies, he developed a strong interest in historically informed performance, which continues to enrich his modern violin playing. Founder and first violin of the Edding Quartet for over 15 years, he has performed on major European stages and recorded extensively. Since 2014, his artistic partnership with pianist Maude Gratton has led to acclaimed recordings of Beethoven’s sonatas and trios, notably with cellist Christophe Coin. As a leader, he combines stylistic insight with natural authority, directing orchestras from the violin with clarity and inspiration. He plays a remarkable 1764 violin by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini, generously on loan from patrons in Basel.
